Spanish moss swaying in the breeze, the kaleidoscope of houses, flowers, sun dresses and polo shirts, a richly bubbling Carolina cadence that mellows and deepens every word: welcome to Charleston!
My travels to the pastel filled city were with my mother and younger sister as a sort of girls trip and send off for the latter as she began a cross country bike trip ending in Santa Monica. In a place where you can almost taste the influence of french traders our visit was rightly spent absorbed in the superb food, delightful shopping and exquisite art (Audubon, sweet grass baskets!) and antiques. Luxury and charm were the name of the game at Belmond Charleston Place, within walking distance of historical and cultural gems and lovely neighborhoods. In between our explorations we ate like queens, between the “avocado toast” of Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit and the delights of 167 Raw. To match vivid and sultry Charleston on our jaunts I wore my Liberty London print J.Crew button down, tucked into high waisted dark denim shorts, accessorized with nude gladiator sandals, rose Topshop sunnies and my Kayu woven tote. Battling the heat of the day, we ducked down side streets, perusing neighborhoods and imagining the histories hidden in the beautiful, eerie light of half shadowed gardens and wrought iron gates.
