After just over six months of blogging, one of the things I've come to appreciate most is the amazing community. So I'm collaborating with fashion, beauty & lifestyle blogger and freelance makeup artist Samantha Ray of Smile Style Slay to give you some insight to this marvelous profession and her own journey as a blogger.
1. How long have you been blogging, and how has your brand changed as your journey progressed?
I started blogging a little over a year ago when I graduated college in May of 2016. I have always had a passion for fashion and beauty and being that I didn’t have a full time job (yet) and was a “free bird” for the summer, I finally had some time to dedicate to something I’ve had my mind on for a while. Over time I would say that my blog has changed from being more makeup and beauty based to being a fashion, beauty and lifestyle blog. I feel so much less limited on what I can do and the brands I can eventually work with now that I’ve expanded my horizons a bit.
2. In your “About” section you have a quote that says, “When you look good, you feel better”- how do you think empowerment and fashion/beauty relate?
I personally have always felt that when you look your best, you can’t help but to feel great. This doesn’t necessarily mean superficially. Great clothes, designer brands and the best skincare products are great but without feeling confident in your own body and skin, it is nearly impossible to take on the world and all of its challenges if we don’t even love ourselves. I have always carried the quote, “Dress for the job you want, not the job that you have.” If you always put your best foot forward, you will be taken seriously and you’ll be on the road to being a total boss-babe!
3. Dream project to work on? And what post or project are you most proud of?
Hmm, this is a tough one. I think that a dream project of mine would be to work with a travel agency and blog about a trip to Greece. I am half Greek, I haven’t yet been to Crete (where my family is from), and I LOVE taking trips and reviewing and writing about my experience. I would also love to work with a company like Quay Australia (sunglass company), or a designer brand like Gucci or LV.
A project that I am most proud of would have to be my video all about my Kylie Royal Peach palette because it performed better than many of my other videos and also the newest project I am working on with other bloggers (like this)! I decided to start a #BloggerSeries where every Monday, I will be interviewing a blogger within the travel, beauty and lifestyle niche to network and get to know others within this community. I think it’s a great way to support each other and help each other grow in this very competitive field!
4. As blogging becomes a more and more competitive industry, with a highly saturated social media market- what would you say is essential for both established bloggers and hopefuls to have? (Either a quality like perseverance or a technique such as really good photography, or both)
I feel that it is essential to plan, plan, plan. Schedule your posts!!! Write a few posts in advance to keep from falling behind or getting over whelmed. Also, having some great stock photos taken of yourself in different outfits, accessories, headshots, all things you can post when you don’t necessarily have the time to create content for the day. Most importantly, what’s helped me grow over the last few months, is to network. Forget about how competitive this industry is and just do your thing. If you love it, it will succeed. There will always be competition, but it’s better to work together and be supportive than it is to dwell on it or give up completely!
5. For fun: if you could only wear one brand for the rest of your life what would it be and why?
AHHH. This is a really hard question for me to answer… if I were to only wear one brand of clothes for the rest of my life, it would probably be Guess. I love the style of the clothes and it is one of the few stores that I find jeans in that fit me like a glove!
