Instagram & The Traveler's Dilemma

From the gothic heights of Big Ben, to the clear blue waters of the French Rivera to the canopy of bricks & cables of the Brooklyn bridge- these are places that draw millions each year. Yet a little voice inside my head say “Really you’re going to be the girl that does a photoshoot HERE?”

In the age of Instagram, the drive to capture beautiful imagery is matched by our paradoxical need to be original. So whenever I travel I face a dilemma. Take photos at the beautiful iconic landmark that I’ve been wanting to visit for years? Or do I choose a charming side street in order to avoid crowds and being “basic”? Don’t get me wrong, the off the beaten path can be lovely. But these landmarks are famous for a reason! Something about them has resonated with people so strongly that they have become part of cultural consciousness. By going to these places we share in these stories, in the footsteps of those who came before. On the other hand I understand the desire to avoid appearing as a cringey tourist at all cost. So go take the photo with the Eiffel tower- but perhaps not the one where you’re touching the top?
